Why I Chose to Specialise in Financial Protection Planning

My journey into financial advice began in the world of mortgages, where I started out as a trainee Mortgage and Protection Adviser, gaining my CeMAP qualification while working at an estate agent. I later moved into a high street bank branch, continuing to advise on both mortgages and protection, but it was during this time that I began to realise where my real passion lay — helping people protect what matters most.

Becoming a mum changed everything for me. It made me think seriously about the future, not just mine, but my son’s too. When I became a single mum shortly after having my baby, the importance of protection became even more personal. I was solely responsible for paying the mortgage, keeping the lights on, and putting food on the table. That is when the need for solid, reliable financial protection truly hit home. I knew I had to practise what I preached, and I also knew I wanted to help other families do the same.

From that point on, I made the decision to specialise fully in protection advice. The more I focussed on this area, the more I realised how many people did not fully understand what their policies did or even if they had the right ones in place. With so many different types of cover and insurers out there, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. I wanted to be the person who could help cut through the jargon and make protection advice clear, simple, and personal.

Fast forward to today, my son is now nineteen and studying law at university, and I have been in the protection planning world for many years. I have seen lots of changes in the industry, but one thing has stayed the same: my passion for helping families feel secure, informed, and supported.

I am very grateful I have never had to make a claim on my own policies, but knowing they are there gives me peace of mind. That is exactly what I want for every client I work with. Whether it is life insurance, income protection, or critical illness cover, I make it my mission to ensure families are properly protected and truly understand the cover they have.
